A wig does not grow out of the scalp so does not become greasy and there's therefore no need for it to be washed every week. Washing your wigs every week would increase the wears and tears on your wig. Such wears and tears include;
- Ripping or tearing of the lace,
- Creating bald spots on the lace,
- Excessive expansion of the elastic wig cap,
- Excessive shedding of the weft,
- Excessive application of hot tools.
You must remember that, for lace wigs, the lace piece is made by tying one or more strands of hair to each hole on the lace by hand so they are delicate. The lace piece then goes through a bleaching process where the knots are lightened to match the skin tone of your scalp. This lightning process makes the knots even more delicate.
Washing, brushing and tugging on this lace piece so often will cause the hair to rip or become loose and fall off creating bald spots the lace piece. The lace piece is the most important part of your part of your lace wig because it sits right on your hairline and is made to look as natural as possible.
The rest of your Lace front wig is made by sewing wefts either by hand or machine onto your elastic wig cap. Washing your wig so often could cause these wefts and thread to become loose and the hair begins to fall off as you brush or comb your wig daily.
Because the wig cap is made from a spandex material which is predominantly elastic, the weight from wet hair quickly expands the wig cap thereby making it become loose over time. As your wig dries with natural air for about two to 5 hours, the weight of the wet hair puts further pressure on the elastic wig cap.
After washing your wig, you must style your wig before going out. Applying styling tools pulls and tugs on the hair, causing more damage to the wig cap. Using excessive hot tools on your hair with or without heat protection causes damage to the hair and eventually the hair breaks and starts to fall off.
These are several reasons why you should not wash your wigs often.
For the best results, every time you wash your wigs do these;
- Section off the hair into four (4) parts.
- Brush and detangle your wig with a hair brush before shampooing.
- When detangling your wig, start from the ends of the hair to the root, working in sections.
- If you encounter any stubborn tangles, use a small teeth comb and gently detangle it from the ends to the root.
- Tilt the comb vertically to gently detangle tough tangles especially around the lace frontal.
- Do not hold the wig from the lace closure or frontal when washing your wigs.
- After applying conditioner on your wig, leave the conditioner in for at least 2 hours before brushing your wig from the ends to the root.
- When rinsing off the conditioner, hold your wig under water and brush gently.
- Rinse your wig for at least 5 minutes to make sure it is thoroughly clean.
- Dry your wig with natural air or a fan.
