Will My Hair Grow Back After Chemotherapy? When to Buy a Wig & How to Choose the Right One

Will My Hair Grow Back After Chemotherapy? When to Buy a Wig & How to Choose the Right One

When Should You Buy a Wig?

This is one of the questions we hear most often.

You might have read that you should buy your wig before chemotherapy begins. While that advice works for some people, it's not always the best option—especially if you're planning to visit us for an in-person fitting.

Here's why.

As your hair begins to fall out, the size and shape of your head naturally change. If you have thick, curly, or very full hair, a wig that's fitted before hair loss may end up feeling loose once your hair is gone.

For that reason, we generally recommend visiting us once your hair has started to shed. At that stage, there's usually still enough of your natural hair to accurately match your color, but there's less volume underneath, allowing us to measure your head more precisely and recommend the correct cap size.

A properly fitted wig is more comfortable, more secure, and looks more natural.

What If You're Buying Online?

If you're ordering online, the process is a little different.

Most natural hair colors—such as black, dark brown, medium brown, and blonde—are readily available, so it's often easy to find a close match from photos. If your hair is a solid color, there's usually no need to order before treatment just to match your shade.

However, if your hair has highlights, balayage, lowlights, or a custom color, we recommend taking several clear photos in natural daylight before treatment begins. Those photos can help you choose the closest match when you're ready to purchase.

Whether you shop online or in person, our goal is always the same: to help you find a wig that looks like you.

Human Hair vs. Synthetic Wigs: Which Is Better During Chemotherapy?

There are two main types of wigs available: synthetic and human hair. Both have their place, but they offer very different experiences.

Human Hair Wigs

At Nalva Wigs, we specialize in 100% human hair wigs because they offer the most natural look and feel.

Benefits of human hair wigs:

  • The most realistic appearance and movement
  • Soft texture that closely resembles natural hair
  • Can be curled, straightened, or styled however you like
  • Longer lifespan with proper care
  • A worthwhile investment if you'll be wearing your wig regularly

For many women going through chemotherapy, looking in the mirror and seeing a hairstyle that feels familiar can make an incredibly difficult season just a little easier.

Synthetic Wigs

Synthetic wigs are generally more affordable, but there are some trade-offs to consider.

Pros:

  • Lower upfront cost
  • Require less styling because they hold their shape

Cons:

  • Fibers don't move or feel like natural hair
  • Limited styling options
  • Shorter lifespan
  • Can develop shine or frizz over time
  • Usually need replacing sooner than a human hair wig

If you're looking for the most natural appearance and plan to wear your wig throughout treatment, we believe a quality human hair wig is well worth the investment. It offers greater comfort, versatility, and confidence—things that become especially important during chemotherapy.

Every person's situation is different, and we'll always help you choose the option that's right for your needs and budget. Our goal isn't simply to sell you a wig—it's to help you feel like yourself again.
